Artist statement

Coming from a poor upbringing in Uruguay, a small country in South America, I relate to poverty and hunger. I was homeless a couple of years ago, and I understand the desperation of being a woman without a roof over your head. This is why I paint images of homeless women in an impressionist abstract manner. I call my process spontaneous realism. My work is about using simple texture, line, color, shape, space, and form to create emotions. These works are a reminder that in a country as large and the United States, many homeless women are treated like street furniture, ignored, and unnoticed.

The inspiration for Early Light was the Causeway Cliffs at dawn.  I  have relatives with descendants from the Northern Ireland Giant Causeway Cliffs area in County Antrim, Ireland.  My relatives went back to Ireland to learn more about their roots and visited the Cliffs. My artwork is a reflection of Northern Ireland and the Giant Causeway Cliffs.  The Giant Causeway cliffs were formed from basalt columns as a result of a giant volcanic eruption. I thought that the basal columns provided an interest in my composition.  This was a scene of early morning light in County Antrim when a few rays of the sun streamed through clouds' white blanket.  The pillars from the Giants bring back memories of fables about magic and magical creatures. Early Light is part of my initial body of work, and it is for sale in support of the Feed Me Project, which raises funds for homeless women and homeless shelters.
