“Roses by themselves do not turn up in the history of still-life painting until Rossi elevates them to that privileged position”. As in her jubilant painting, Solitary Rose, she transformed the often overlooked and literally oppressed natural form of the rose into a powerfully personal subject to be closely studied and admired. Like her notorious flower paintings first developed in the 2000s, the present work from 2014 imbeds an object of everyday life with layers of association and elements of abstraction, creating a monumental totem that is both deeply connected to nature and a transcendent emotional experience. Employing a dramatic contrast of sensuous and angular forms, and bright yellow and cool green hues, Solitary Rose demonstrates why “Of all her Floral subjects, the rose pictures are perhaps her most personal and autobiographical statement that Rossi created during her years in Atlanta”.
