In 1972, Rossi left her native Uruguay for New York. Although her abstract works had gained recognition in her home country, New York’s dynamic art scene offered an energy Uruguay did not. Here, Modernist principles competed with a new mode of Abstract Expressionism challenging approaches to form and colour.
Composed of brightly colored, deeply connected to nature, the work Swimming with the Parrot Fish explores her abstract vision of nature, in which paradoxically texture and colour appears to extend beyond the boundaries of the canvas edge. Although abstract, the work echoes of her earlier seascapes – a reference, perhaps to the enduring influence of her childhood in the beaches of Uruguay’s Punta Del Este.
