Artist statement

Coming from a poor upbringing in Uruguay, a small country in South America, I relate to poverty and hunger. I was homeless a couple of years ago, and I understand the desperation of being a woman without a roof over your head. This is why I paint images of homeless women in an impressionist abstract manner. I call my process spontaneous realism. My work is about using simple texture, line, color, shape, space, and form to create emotions. These works are a reminder that in a country as large and the United States, many homeless women are treated like street furniture, ignored, and unnoticed.

A masterful fusion of sculpture and painting, my monumental Fjords is a superb example of the artist's iconic resin and gems paintings. Drawing on works by modern masters, I created a visual lexicon defining her work. The present work articulates the use of quartz gems of various colors, which becomes form, defying the traditional representational role of pigment. Unbound by objective representation constraints, my work unifies figure and rock into one entity. The decisive point in my development was reached when I abandoned the traditional dynamic of the painting's organization when the form emancipated itself from its customary canvas support to lead an independent existence in the visual world. Fjords are part of my initial body of work, and it is for sale in support of the Feed Me Project, which raises funds for homeless women and homeless shelters.
