Artist statement

Coming from a poor upbringing in Uruguay, a small country in South America, I relate to poverty and hunger. I was homeless a couple of years ago, and I understand the desperation of being a woman without a roof over your head. This is why I paint images of homeless women in an impressionist abstract manner. I call my process spontaneous realism. My work is about using simple texture, line, color, shape, space, and form to create emotions. These works are a reminder that in a country as large and the United States, many homeless women are treated like street furniture, ignored, and unnoticed.

I created Grand Teton Adventure II as a study in the Hudson River School of Artists' Plein air movement. Grand Teton Adventure II utilizes the dynamic phi rectangle armature for compositional design and a warm color palette scheme. The color scheme included Ultramarine blue, Yellow ochre, Cobalt violet, and Phthalo Green. The dramatic forms and vigorous technique reflects the British aesthetic theory of sublime. The painting began as an outdoor sketch in oils.  Light influenced the formation of mountains and trees. The illumination of the snow in the mountains demonstrated my attention to detail. My preference for an image created at dawn led to this study of early Light in Wyoming's Grand Teton National Park. Grand Teton Adventure II is part of my initial body of work. It is currently for sale in support of the Feed Me Project, which raises funds for homeless women and homeless shelters.
